Hi all,

I am sometimes overwhelmed by the 100s of great personal finance blogs.  Granted there are distinct niches like going green, retirement, and investing, I was thinking of taking down my outdated blogroll and making two new blogrolls, focused on writing style, to help me catch up during the week.  Borrowing what Andrea said from Chipotle vs Qboda, is your blog "personal stories with personal finance sprinkled inside" or are you the opposite?  So where does your blog fall?

Personal Stories or Research

Thanks!  As an added incentive, even if you don't think this new category system holds any water, people who reply will be added into my new blogrolls first.  Have a good weekend.

Update:  Catching up on some blogs and actually most personal finance blogs are personal, duh!  I initally thought it would be a 50/50 split, personal and research.  Maybe that is too broad.

How about this one, if you could choose a tent pole topic for your personal finance blog, what would it be?  Things that come to my mind is debt, retirement, investing, how to, green, passive income, frugality.  Perhaps this is futile since we all like to jump into different topics.  I think I'm just hung up on catching up on 100s of PF blogs.  I could take it in smaller chunks.  Today I feel like going green.  Tomorrow I want to learn about investing.  Monday I want to learn about retiring.  Is this just me?  Embarassed

Mine have recently been personal finance stories for the most part: my own experiences related to personal finance and making money.  Or my opinions on stuff.

Good questions there. I had the same thoughts on one of my blog posts. I like to think (in my rather limited blog post history) that I fall more into the "research" side than the "personal stories" side, but that would be if you have a nice broad view of what "research" is. I'm less technical at this point, and tend to think more introspectively about personal finance.

If you reach any definitive conclusion on the topic, be sure and share!

I am like most of other blogs, 40% -40% split between research and Personal stories and 20 is round up. So in a week, 2 personal stories, 2 research articles and 1 round up, 5 posts in all.

I definitely think there is a lot more hard work involved with research articles, that being said, I'm a bum and usually go the personal story route… then again I really wanted to center my blog around personal finance based on my own personal experiences.

Hi mbhunter,

I'm more of a personal stories and opinions blog, too.  Thanks!

Hi Matt,

I think my loose definition of research is providing analysis and detailed breakdowns of concepts.  If I needed help with a research paper, I go to a "research" blog as a resource.  On the personal stories side, my example would be someone who had tons of debt and explains their process and experience to get out.  Hopefully their story provides inspiration and a model for others to follow.

Hi Mark,

I kinda figured that, haha.  Guess I'm trying to figure where other more broad personal finance blogs stand.  Thanks!

Hi One Cent,

Perhaps I'm being too ambitious.  What do you think would be a good term to describe a combo blog like yours?  Part personal stories, part research?  Combo, hybrid?  Don't bother, too restrictive?

Hey Justin,

I totally respect research blogs.  There is a lot of work involved.  I'm a bum, too.  Since I know I'm not a good researcher, I go the other route, personal stories, experiences, and opinions.

I would definitely fall into the research category. I don't think I've shared many personal stories on my blog. I focus on 'evergreen' posts that would still be relevant in a few years.

If I had to pick a category it would be investing first then personal finance second.

Hey LaTisha,

Thanks for chiming in.  Great point about evergreen posts.  I may need to think longer about they way I tackle posts from my personal stories angle.  Will it stand the test of time?

I try to have a limited amount of topics but also a variety within each of them. I would say my blog focuses mostly on good money management and being green. I often tie the two together. 60 percent or so would fall here. There other 40 is split between health tips, productivity, gardening, career, and frugality.

I am about frugality from a fashionable woman's perspective. This means that it is going to be personal since women tend to be relationship driven, yet, informational. I become the most excited when a reader tries something that I have suggested and LOVES it. It makes blogging so worthwhile.

Hi Miss T,

I like how you clearly define your topics and you seem to be following it to a T!  I think I throw out these questions because I am trying to get a clearer picture for myself.  I seem to be going 40% personal finance topics, 40% personal development, and 20% entertainment.  Let's see if I stick with this or take a radical turn at the end of the year.

Hi Super Frugalette,

Your blog is pretty defined as well.  I'm trying to define myself better.  I think my worthwhile feeling comes from two angles.  If a reader was inspired to action or if my reader was entertained that their day is better than it was before reading my post.  The Holy Grail, maybe one day I can consistently do both!

I feel mine is the same (although some people would say my tent pole is retirement).  Retirement is my goal but I write about money management I guess.
